Open Question: Technology in countries other than the United States.?

I am in a Technology, Society and Culture class and I have to do an 8 week long term paper. I am looking for some ideas. I need to find a technology that was developed in another country other than the United States and follow that development, explaining how it changed the society and culture of that country.
